This is the Parker Report for October 7, 2015
I decided to do an early edition of "The Parker Report" today because I think this warranted special attention since Parker was being an especially naughty bunny early this morning (and possibly last night).
It all started when I was awaken by loud music at 5:00 am this morning.
My first thought was that it was coming from our neighbor's driveway across the street.
She has a son in his early 20's that works odd hours and often comes home around this time of day playing his loud obnoxious music coming from his car as he pulls into the driveway. (Most of the time it's just noise since I don't consider rap "music".)
I got out of bed and put on my shorts. As I got to the upstairs hallway on my way to the office to look out the window, I realized that the sound was not outside...it was coming from my family room!
With a question mark hanging over my head, I walked downstairs to find out that the A/V receiver somehow got turned on and was playing the loud music.
IT'S FIVE A.M. FOR GOODNESS SAKE, HOW COULD THIS HAPPEN?
I turned on the lights, and as I hunted for the most likely culprit in this scenario
(AKA "The White Shadow" or "Chewy"), I found clues to the crime on the floor...
The remote to our Denon A/V receiver (complete with trademark chew marks), Brad's reading glasses and ear buds and a training clicker (given to us by Dave and Beki with Harley, our first bunny) all placed together on the area rug in the middle of the family room.
I also found a couple of foil candy wrappers from the Ghirardelli Chocolates we ate last night. They were on the floor next to the sofa and end table. All of these things had been on the end table between the love seat and sofa when we went to bed last night so the only explanation for why they're on the floor now is that Parker hopped onto the sofa and pulled each of them down (in the dark) one by one. I picked up the remote and turned off the music and continued looking for the little furball. At least Brad had put our good universal remote in its charger on top of one of the speakers (away from temptation) so it was saved from the fate of the other one.
My first concern was more for his safety because I was worried that he may have swallowed some of the candy wrappers or plastic pieces. I peeked over the back of the love seat and found him in one of his usual hang-outs, looking up at me with that "I didn't do anything wrong" look. Right after that, he ran toward the kitchen to get away from me.
Now Brad's out of bed and on his way down the stairs.
He checked the damage on remote for the Denon A/V receiver. Unfortunately, the receiver is actually a "demo" unit for our business and we use it on a daily basis, but we can't resell it with the remote in this condition. We'll have to find a replacement remote since the unit is discontinued now and we can't get one from the manufacturer. Parker ran past Brad going from the family room to the kitchen and on his way past the sofa he did one of his little "laughing hops" where he shakes his head and body as he's airborne.
I picked up most of the things from the floor plus a few more items that were still on the end table and put them out of his reach on the kitchen table for now. Then I went back upstairs to try to go back to sleep since it was not quite 5:30 am.
Unfortunately, I was now wide awake and couldn't get back to sleep so I got up a half-hour later. Brad had given Parker his breakfast while I was in bed. We ate breakfast and I read emails on my tablet at the kitchen table. I hadn't seen Parker for a while so I thought he had followed Brad upstairs to the office as he usually does (hence the nickname "White Shadow"). As I was loading the dishwasher with the breakfast dishes, I heard an odd sound coming from the direction of the family room. I closed the dishwasher and walked over toward the sound and guess what I found? A little white rabbit ON the sofa with his front paws up on the arm nibbling on the corner of the box of Warner Brothers Loony Tunes coasters (the single item I had left on the table, of course). I firmly said "OFF" a couple of times until he hopped off the sofa. I went back to the dishwasher and just as I was refilling the rinse agent I heard Brad calling to me asking if I would close Parker's pen. At the same time he was walking into the kitchen holding Parker in his arms. This time he was caught chewing on the back of the love seat, a federal offense in bunny world, punishable by time out in "the pen". So as I write this, he's cooling off. I know animals usually don't put two & two together, but he's pretty smart so maybe he'll associate it a little with what he did.
I don't know where this all came from. He usually acts out when we're gone at work for a long time and he has pent up energy, or wants to show us that he's mad that we left.
But we were home all day yesterday because our new storage shed was being built in the back yard (finally!) so he had plenty of time with us. He did get a little freaked out each time he heard the air-nailer go off outside. I had to sit with him as he was eating lunch because every time the guy would shoot a row of nails he would get wide-eyed, stop eating and run into his box. This went on for a few minutes and I had to keep petting him to calm him down. Once they left at the end of the day and things were quiet again he was just fine and even watched NCIS with us last night. For some reason he likes to watch crime dramas. I guess his TV selections are a bit more serious than Harley, who liked the game shows.
He should learn a few things from the shows about covering his tracks better.
I've been writing this for about an hour so I should probably go down and check on the inmate and see if he's ready to be released from solitary confinement. I think we may be in for an interesting day.
3:00 pm update...
Brad and I were upstairs working (he was in the office and I was uploading photos) and we heard a sound that we thought was coming from downstairs. We went down to see if Parker was getting in mischief since he was previously trying to chew on the upstairs guest bath cabinets before laying down in the hallway and then he took off. We didn't see him anywhere downstairs and as we were standing in the family room and kitchen, we heard a sound coming from upstairs. We went up and pinpointed the sound and Brad found Parker in our bedroom, chewing on the DirecTV remote. What is his thing with remote controls?!
Now we have messed up buttons on that one too. I guess we're going to have to keep them in drawers from now on since he can hop on the bed and get to the night stands.
We should have known it was going to be one of those days. And the day's not over yet!
